Serial Units
Serial Units give every individual unit a permanent identity — capture serial numbers, view the Digital Product Passport, track warranty and follow the unit lifecycle from stock to customer.
Section 01
What are Serial Units?
1 minute
Serial Units give every individual unit of a serialised product its own permanent identity — a unique reference (e.g. SN-2026-00001), a scannable Digital Product Passport (DPP) and a full lifecycle history. No login is needed to scan a passport.
- Status moves In Stock → Shipped when you ship to a customer — this records ownership and starts the warranty clock
- Each unit gets a printable QR label (the Public Passport Label) — scan it to see warranty status, authenticity and service history
- Serials are captured manually (one per line) or auto-generated — see Section 03
A product must have serial tracking enabled on its product record before it appears in the Capture Serials modal. Only serial-tracked products appear in the product dropdown when capturing new units.
Section 02
The serial units list
1 minute
Navigate to Warehouse → Serial Units to view all captured serial units. Each row shows the serial number, linked product, current status, owner (if shipped), warranty dates and a Passport action button.

| Column | What it shows |

| Product | The product this serial unit belongs to — e.g. M8 Hex Bolts — Grade 8.8. Must be a serial-tracked product. |
| Status | In Stock — unit captured and held in warehouse. Shipped — unit shipped to a customer via Ship to Customer. |
| Owner | The customer the unit has been shipped to — e.g. 0100524 (Reef Zlements). Blank until the unit is shipped. |

Section 03
Capturing serial units
2 minutes
Click + Capture Serials in the page header to open the Capture Serials modal. Select the serial-tracked product, then either enter serial numbers manually (one per line) or leave the text area blank and use the Auto-generate counter to let Brytebuild create sequential serial numbers automatically.
| Field | Required | What to enter |
|---|---|---|
| Serial-Tracked Product | Required | Select the product to assign these serials to — e.g. M8 Hex Bolts Grade 8.8. Only products with serial tracking enabled appear here. |
| Serial Numbers | Optional | Enter your own serial numbers, one per line — e.g. SN-2026-00001 / SN-2026-00002. Leave blank to use Auto-generate instead. |
| Auto-generate | Optional | Set a count — e.g. 1 — and Brytebuild will create that many sequential serial numbers automatically (e.g. SN-2026-00001). Only used when the Serial Numbers field is blank. |
Clicking Capture creates one serial unit per entry (or per auto-generated number). Each unit immediately gets a Digital Product Passport with a unique QR code at app.brytebuild.co.uk/dpp/…/SN-2026-XXXXX. The initial lifecycle event "Received into stock" is logged automatically.
Section 04
The Digital Product Passport
3 minutes
Click Passport on any serial unit row to open its Digital Product Passport. The DPP is the unit's permanent identity record — it shows the unit's identity, warranty and ownership status, a printable QR label, full lifecycle history and provenance links.
