Register Item / Assembly — 3-step (Item) or 4-step (Assembly) wizard
The Register wizard lets you add Items (3 steps: General, Drawings, Assets) or Assemblies (4 steps: General, BOM, Drawings, Assets) — only Name and Product ID are required.
Section 01
Registering a new product
1 minute
Click + Add Item / Assembly from the Inventory page to open the registration wizard. You first choose the product type, then complete a guided multi-step form. Items have 3 steps; Assemblies have 4 steps — the extra step is the Bill of Materials (BOM) where you select which component parts go into the assembly.
Item — 3 steps
- General — name, product ID, barcodes, pricing, traceability, suppliers
- Drawings — technical drawings (JPEG, PNG, max 10 MB)
- Assets — supporting documents (PDF, Excel, MP4, max 50 MB)
Final button: Create Item
Assembly — 4 steps
- General — name, product ID, barcodes, pricing, traceability, suppliers
- BOM — select component parts and set quantities for this assembly
- Drawings — technical drawings (JPEG, PNG, max 10 MB)
- Assets — supporting documents (PDF, Excel, MP4, max 50 MB)
Final button: Create Assembly
Every other field in Step 1 is optional — you can create a product with just a Name and Product ID and fill in pricing, barcodes and suppliers later via Edit Item. Drawings and Assets steps are also optional — click Next Step / Create to skip them.
Section 02
Step 0 — Choose Item or Assembly
1 minute
After clicking + Add Item / Assembly, you land on the type selector. The choice determines the number of steps and whether a Bill of Materials is required.

Register New Item / Assembly
Choose whether you're adding a standalone item or a multi-part assembly to your catalogue.
SELECT TYPE TO REGISTER
Item
A standalone product — a single manufactured or purchased part with its own stock level, pricing and barcode.
Assembly
A multi-part product built from other items — define its Bill of Materials, routes and production steps.
| Type | Use when… | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Item | The product is a single part — something you buy from a supplier or manufacture as one unit. It has its own stock level, price and barcode, but no sub-components. | Bamboo Handle (GLC-001-01), Bottle Cap (GLC-002-04), Carbon Fiber (PAN-23), Coconut Fiber Bristles (GLC-001-02) |
| Assembly | The product is built from multiple items. You define a Bill of Materials listing which components (Items or other Assemblies) go into it and in what quantity. It also has a production route. | Biodegradable Cleaning Brush (GLC-001), Aston Martin Exhaust (ASE-115), box 1+2, box 1&2+label |

The Item Catalogue shows both Items and Assemblies — so you can build multi-level BOMs. For example, Biodegradable Cleaning Brush (GLC-001) is itself an assembly, and it can be a component of a larger assembly. Brytebuild calculates the full nested BOM for MRP and Buildable qty calculations.
Step 3 / 4 — Drawings
Upload technical drawings for this assembly — JPEG, JPG, PNG or WEBP, max 10 MB each. Mark one image as Primary. This image becomes the cover thumbnail in the Inventory list and product picker across the platform.

Section 05
Step 1 field reference
2 minutes
Full reference for every field in the General step — the same for both Item and Assembly.
| Section | Field | Required | What to enter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity | Name | Yes | Full product name — e.g. Bamboo Handle, Biodegradable Cleaning Brush, Aston Martin Exhaust. |
| Product ID | Yes | Your internal code — e.g. GLC-001-01, ASE-115, PAN-23. Must be unique. Used across POs, WOs and sales orders. | |
| Description | No | Free-text description of the product — shown on detail pages and can appear on PDFs. | |
| Barcodes & SKU | EAN-13 | No | European Article Number — exactly 13 digits. Used for barcode scanning in the warehouse and on product labels. |
| UPC | No | Universal Product Code — exactly 12 digits. Common in North American retail. Optional if you only use EAN. | |
| SKU | No | Internal stock-keeping unit code — free format. Separate from the Product ID. For example, Product ID = GLC-001-01, SKU = a shorter warehouse pick code. | |
| Pricing & Stock | Price | No | Sale price per unit — e.g. 10. Used on sales orders and quotes. Currency follows your company settings. |
| Cost | No | Standard cost per unit — e.g. 10. Used for COGS calculations and cost variance reporting in the Cost & valuation tab. | |
| Minimum Stock Level | No | Reorder trigger threshold — e.g. 10. When stock falls below this, the dot in the Inventory list turns red. MRP uses this to generate purchase suggestions. | |
| Classification | Traceability | No | How individual units are tracked: None — quantity only (default), Serial (each unit has a unique serial number), or Lot / Batch (units grouped by production batch). Cannot be changed after stock is received. |
| Status * | Yes | Active — the product is live and can be used in orders. Archived — retired; hidden from most pickers. | |
| Unit | No | Base unit of measure — e.g. Each, Kilograms, Meters, Liters. All stock quantities are stored in this unit. Alternate units can be added later on the Units tab. | |
| Suppliers | Select suppliers (top table) | No | Tick one or more suppliers from the top table — e.g. CWW Engineers Supply Company (W12 7HA) or PRM Bottles. Enter the per-unit price for each. Selected suppliers appear in the bottom table. |
| Price (per unit) | No | The price this supplier charges per unit — used on POs and in cost variance reporting. Set individually per supplier using the "Add Price" field next to each row. | |
| Preferred flag | No | Mark one supplier as Preferred — MRP uses this to suggest which supplier to order from when raising a purchase order. | |
| BOM (Assembly only) | Component (tick + quantity) | Yes (for Assembly) | Tick each component from the Item Catalogue and set the quantity needed per finished assembly unit — e.g. tick Bamboo Handle (GLC-001-01) with quantity 1 ea to add it to this assembly's BOM. |
Once you receive stock against a product, the Traceability setting is locked. Choose carefully: use None for standard bulk items (e.g. Carbon Fiber by the metre), Serial for high-value individual units (e.g. Aston Martin Exhaust components), and Lot / Batch for products with expiry dates or batch QC requirements.
