CAPA
ISO 10.2 — corrective & preventive actions raised against nonconformances. Covers raising actions, the four-stage lifecycle (Open → In progress → Verifying → Closed), the Workflow section for advancing status, effectiveness verification, and how closed records are permanently locked in Brytebuild.
Section 01
What is CAPA?
2 minutes
CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Action) in Brytebuild is the ISO 10.2 system for formally addressing nonconformances. Every NCR can have one or more CAPA actions raised against it. Actions follow a fixed lifecycle and are only closed once the effectiveness of the action has been verified — at which point the record is locked.
- Corrective actions address the root cause of an existing nonconformance — eliminating the defect and preventing recurrence
- Preventive actions eliminate a potential nonconformance before it occurs — proactive risk reduction
- Both types follow the same lifecycle: Open → In progress → Verifying → Closed
- An action can only be closed by recording an effectiveness check — confirming no recurrence of the defect
- Once closed, the record is locked — it cannot be edited or deleted
- Preventive actions can also be raised automatically when an inspection raises an NCR
When an inspection raises an NCR, Brytebuild can automatically create a preventive action linked to that NCR. You'll see these in the list with a description like "Preventive action for NCR-2026-0008: Auto-raised from inspection…"

Raising a new action
2 minutes

Fill in the fields below, then click Raise action
The action to eliminate the (root) cause
| Field | Required | What to enter |
|---|---|---|
| Nonconformance Report | Required | Select the NCR this action is linked to — e.g. NCR-2026-0008. The action inherits the NCR context. |
| Type | Optional | Corrective — eliminates the root cause of an existing defect. Preventive — removes a risk before a defect occurs. Defaults to Corrective. |
| Due Date | Optional | The target completion date for the action. Shown in the list. Leave blank if not applicable. |
| Description | Required | What the action entails — the specific steps, fixes or measures to be taken. E.g. "Re-torque all M8 Hex Bolts — Grade 8.8 in batch PO-2026-0033 to spec. Update goods-in inspection checklist." |
Clicking Edit Action from the detail footer opens an identical form pre-filled with current values. Only open (non-locked) actions can be edited.

Section 05
Workflow & closing an action
3 minutes
The Workflow section on each action record lets you advance the status through the lifecycle and ultimately close the action. Closing requires an effectiveness check — a record that the action worked and the nonconformance has not recurred.
Workflow
Advance the status or verify effectiveness to close the action
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Advance Status | Moves the action to the next lifecycle stage — Open → In progress → Verifying. Use this as you work through the corrective steps. |
| Verify Effectiveness | Free-text field for recording evidence that the action worked — e.g. "3 months without recurrence of M8 bolt dimensional rejection at goods-in." Required to close. |
| Verify & close | Saves the effectiveness note, sets status to Closed, and locks the record. This action is irreversible. |
Once Verify & close is clicked the record is locked. The description, type, NCR link and effectiveness note cannot be changed. If you closed an action in error, raise a new action against the same NCR.
Section 06
Closed and locked actions
2 minutes
A closed action shows a distinct locked view. The record is read-only — no Edit Action or Delete buttons appear in the footer — and a green banner confirms the locked state. The effectiveness verification text is shown in a highlighted panel.

Every CAPA action moves through a fixed four-stage lifecycle:
| Status | What's happening | How to advance |
|---|---|---|
| Open | Action raised, not yet started. Fully editable. | Use Advance Status dropdown to move to In progress. |
| In progress | Work is underway to implement the corrective or preventive measure. | Use Advance Status to move to Verifying once the action steps are complete. |
| Verifying | The action has been taken. Monitoring for recurrence before closing. | Record the effectiveness check and click Verify & close to lock. |
| 🔒 Closed | Effectiveness verified. Record is permanently locked — read-only. | No further action. Locked record preserved for audit. |
