Configurator — build made-to-order product templates

The Configurator lets you define configurable-product templates with options, pricing deltas and compatibility rules — then use a wizard to price and create made-to-order variants for quotes and sales orders.

What is the Configurator?

1 minute

The Configurator lives under Commerce › Sales › Configurator. It is a two-part tool — a template builder (where you define the product, its options and materials) and a wizard (where you pick option values to produce a priced, made-to-order product variant that goes straight into a Quote or Sales Order line).

  • The Door configurator template is currently active — base price GBP 100, base lead time 2 days
  • Two buyer options: Glazing (required, Yes/No, Double +£10, +1 day) and Shining (optional, Yes/No, Double +£10, +1 day)
  • A compatibility rule prevents Glazing: Double and Shining: Double being selected together — the conflicting choice is greyed out in the wizard
  • Once configured, clicking Create product generates a priced variant that can be added to a Quote or Sales Order
  • A Configure made-to-order product button also appears inside the Sales Order Items List, launching a modal version of the wizard inline

Create or edit a configurator template

1 minute

Click + New configurator from the wizard page, or Edit this configurator from the template dropdown. The form has four sections: Details, Base Materials, Options and Compatibility Rules. Edit opens the same form pre-populated.

SALES › CONFIGURATOR › NEW

New Configurator

Define a configurable-product template — base price & lead time, always-on materials, and the options buyers pick from. The wizard then uses it to configure, price and create made-to-order products.

Section 04

Details section

1 minute

The Details section defines the core pricing and timing parameters that apply before any options are selected.

Field Required What to enter
NameYesThe template name shown in the wizard dropdown — e.g. Door.
Base PriceYesThe starting price before any option deltas are added — e.g. 100 (GBP 100.00). Option Price Deltas add to this.
DescriptionNoFree-text description of the configurable product — e.g. Double Door. Visible in the template editor only.
Base Lead Time (Days)YesLead time in days before any option deltas — e.g. 2. Option Lead Time Deltas add to this. The Door template gives 2 + 1 (Glazing: Double) = 3 days total.
Configurable Product (Template)YesThe catalogue product that this configurator makes configurable — e.g. door. Configured outputs become variants of this product in the catalogue.

Section 05

Base Materials section

1 minute

Base Materials are always included in the Bill of Materials (BOM) regardless of which options the buyer selects. The Door template has one base material: door, QTY 1, ea (base).

Column What to enter
MaterialSearch and select from the product catalogue — e.g. door.
QTYQuantity of this material required per configured product — e.g. 1.
UnitUnit of measure — e.g. ea (base). Auto-populated from the material's product record.
+ Add materialAdds another material row to the base BOM.
RemoveRemoves that material row from the base BOM.

Section 06

Options section

2 minutes

Options are the choices the buyer makes in the wizard. Each option has a name, type, and one or more values. Each value can adjust the price and lead time, and optionally add its own materials to the BOM. The Door template has two options: Glazing (required) and Shining (optional).

Field Door template value What it does
Option NameGlazing / ShiningThe label shown to the buyer in the wizard — e.g. Glazing or Shining.
TypeYes / NoThe input type for this option. Yes/No presents a set of discrete value buttons. Other types may be available in future.
RequiredGlazing: ✓, Shining: ✗When checked, the buyer must select a value before Create product is enabled. Marked with an asterisk (*) in the wizard.
Label (value)DoubleThe display name of this value in the wizard button — e.g. Double.
Price Delta10Amount added to the Base Price when this value is selected — e.g. +10 brings GBP 100 → GBP 110. Shown as "+10.00" on the value button.
Lead Time Delta (Days)1Days added to Base Lead Time when this value is selected — e.g. +1 brings 2 days → 3 days.
DefaultGlazing: ✓, Shining: ✗When checked, this value is pre-selected in the wizard. Glazing: Double is the default — it is already highlighted when the wizard loads.
Materials for this valueShining: Double → door ×1Optional BOM addition specific to this value. When Shining: Double is selected, door ×1 ea (base) is added to the BOM in addition to the base materials.
+ Add optionAdds a new option block below the existing ones.
+ Add valueAdds another value row within an option block.
Price and lead time update live in the wizard

Every Price Delta and Lead Time Delta you define here is reflected instantly in the wizard Summary panel as the buyer makes selections. For the Door template: Base 100 + Glazing:Double +10 = 110.00, Base 2 days + Glazing:Double +1 day = 3 days.

Section 07

Compatibility Rules section

1 minute

Compatibility Rules mark two option values as mutually exclusive. When one is selected in the wizard, the incompatible value is automatically greyed out and unclickable. The Door template has one rule: Glazing: Double is not available with Shining: Double.

Field Example value What it does
First valueGlazing: DoubleSelect the first option:value pair — e.g. Glazing: Double.
is not available with(fixed label)Fixed connector phrase — always reads "is not available with".
Second valueShining: DoubleSelect the incompatible option:value pair — e.g. Shining: Double. When Glazing: Double is selected in the wizard, Shining: Double is greyed out, and vice versa.
+ Add ruleAdds another compatibility rule row. You can define as many incompatible pairs as needed.
RemoveDeletes the compatibility rule.
Rules are bidirectional

A compatibility rule is automatically enforced in both directions. Adding "Glazing: Double is not available with Shining: Double" means that selecting either one greys out the other — you do not need to add a second reverse rule.
