Scan / Print Barcode
The Barcode module manages containers, stock locations and label printing — scan or print barcodes, view container detail records, and move stock between locations.
Section 01
What is Scan / Print Barcode?
1 minute
Every physical container of stock in Brytebuild has a barcode — a unique UUID that acts as its licence plate. Scanning it tells you instantly what's inside, where it is, and its full history. Creating a new barcode generates a printable label you can stick directly on a bin, shelf, pallet or product.
- Scan a barcode — use your phone camera, a handheld scanner, or type the code manually to look up any container
- Print a barcode — generate a new barcode for a product item (Single Item) or a storage container/location (Storage)
- Barcode list — browse all barcode containers across all warehouses with full filtering, print and Excel export
- Move Contents — transfer stock from one barcode container to another without leaving the page
- Three container types: Product, Location and Storage — each has different fields and available actions
- Works on any phone or device — no specialist hardware needed for camera scanning
Scan / Print Barcode covers several distinct workflows — scanning, printing, barcode details (with three container-type variants) and moving items. Use the section chips above to jump to any workflow. The Move Location workflow is only accessible from within a Product barcode record.
Section 02
The three container types
2 minutes
Every barcode is assigned one of three container types. The type determines what data the barcode holds, how it behaves in the warehouse, and which actions are available on its detail page. A coloured badge in the top-right of the detail page shows which type you are looking at.
⊕ Product
Holds a specific product (item or assembly) with a quantity, grade and tracking preference. The most common type — used for bins, pallets and totes of inventory.
Adjust Stock · Move Location · Print Barcode · Allocations tab · History tab (Stock Takes + Adjustments)
⊕ Location
Marks a specific position in the warehouse — a shelf row/column. Created via Create Barcode → Storage, then placed on the warehouse map. Can contain multiple product containers.
Print Barcode only. No stock adjustment or allocation tabs.
⊕ Storage
A named storage container or area (e.g. "Shelf A3", "Cold Store 1"). Similar to Location but used for movable containers or named zones rather than fixed warehouse positions.
Print Barcode only. Same UI as Location — General tab with Container Data table.

The barcode list
2 minutes
The List tab shows all barcode containers in the system — one row per container, including unassigned barcodes that have no warehouse yet. Use Print, Download Excel or Search to find specific containers.
| Barcode | Attached Item Name | Warehouse | Container Type | Qty | Tracked | Row | Column | WH Element | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| — | Main warehouse | ⊕ Location | 0 | ● Untracked | # 3 | # 1 | Not found | 👁 View Details |
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Barcode | The unique UUID for this container — e.g. 017e7777-ec9a-4ec0-bdbf-31fcf011559e. Click View Details to open the full barcode record. |
| Attached Item Name | The product name linked to this barcode (e.g. Shoes, 10524). Blank for Location/Storage barcodes and unattached containers. |
| Warehouse | Which warehouse this container is currently in — e.g. development warehouse, warehouse 3. "No warehouse" means not yet placed. |
| Container Type | ⊕ Product, ⊕ Location, or ⊕ Storage. See Section 02 for the difference between the three types. |
| Qty | Current stock quantity in this container. 0 = empty. |
| Tracked | ● Untracked means stock movement is not tracked against this barcode. Tracked means it is. Set on the barcode configuration at creation. |
| Row / Column | Grid position in the warehouse designer — e.g. Row # 3, Column # 1. Blank if the container has not been placed in a warehouse layout. |
| WH Element | The warehouse shelf/zone element this container is assigned to. "Not found" if it has not been assigned in the designer. |
| Action — View Details | Opens the full Barcode Details page for this container. |
Section 04
Scanning a barcode
1 minute
The Scan Barcode tab lets you look up any container instantly. Choose your input method: use the device camera, a dedicated scanner, or type the barcode UUID manually. On a successful scan the system opens the Barcode Details page for that container.
| Method | How to use | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Scan with Camera | Opens the device camera. Point at the QR code on the label. The barcode is read automatically on focus. | Phone-based scanning without specialist hardware |
| Scan with Scanner | Activates input mode for a USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner. Trigger the scanner while the field is active. | High-volume scanning at a workstation |
| Enter Manually | Type or paste the barcode UUID into the text field, then click Submit Barcode. | Recovering a container from a damaged label, or copy-paste from a list |
Section 05

Barcode detail record
4 minutes
Click View Details on any list row, or scan a barcode, to open its detail record. The page shows different content and actions depending on the container type. A PRODUCT, LOCATION or STORAGE badge in the top-right corner shows which type you are looking at.
Product barcode — three tabs (General · History · Allocations)
Product barcodes have the richest detail page. Three tabs surface different information: General shows identity, the QR label, genealogy and the container data table. History shows stock takes and manual adjustments. Allocations shows the stock summary and any active soft holds.

Location & Storage barcodes — General tab only
Location and Storage barcodes share the same UI. They have only a General tab — no History or Allocations. The Details fields are the same as Product but Container Type shows Location or Storage. The Container Data table shows child containers (product barcodes held within this location). The footer only shows Print Barcode — no Adjust Stock or Move Location.

Moving items — the Move Location workflow
3 minutes
From a Product barcode's detail page, click Move Location to open the Move Items page. This lets you physically relocate a container in the warehouse. Three move modes are available:
| Mode | What it does | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Move Container | Moves the entire barcode container — contents and all — to a new location. You scan or select the destination location barcode. A confirmation modal shows source → destination before committing. | Moving a whole bin or pallet to a new shelf position |
| Split Content | Moves a specified quantity out of this container into a new barcode. Optionally splits into equally divided barcodes. You set the quantity then submit. | Splitting a pallet into smaller bins, or moving partial stock to another area |
| Move Contents | Moves all content from this container into another existing container. The source container becomes empty. | Consolidating two bins into one, or repackaging |

Selecting a destination — Select Warehouse Element
Clicking Select Warehouse Element opens a modal showing a visual map of your warehouse. Choose a warehouse from the dropdown (e.g. Main warehouse), then click a shelf or zone on the floor plan. The barcode ID, row, column, type and warehouse of the selected element populate the right panel. Once selected, click Move Items to confirm.
Location and Storage barcodes do not have a Move Location button. Their physical position is managed through the Warehouse Designer. Only Product barcode containers can be moved between locations using the Move Items workflow.
Section 08
Move Contents — page-level transfer
2 minutes
The Move Contents button in the page header opens a full-page overlay that lets you transfer contents from one barcode to another without opening any individual barcode record. The workflow is: (1) scan the destination barcode (where stock is going) → (2) click Scan Source Barcode to add the container(s) to move from → (3) click Move Contents to transfer.
| Step | Action | What appears |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Scan destination | Scan with Camera / Scanner or enter manually, then Submit Barcode | Destination Barcode Details section populates — e.g. Row: 3, Column: 1, Warehouse Element: Storage Shelf, ID: 028c8147-5be4-40b3-999d-3853d4fd3dfe |
| 2 — Scan source | Click Scan Source Barcode (bottom-left) and scan the container to move from | A row appears in the table with Barcode ID, Item ID, Item Name (e.g. Shoes), Item Type, Status, Total Stock (502), Barcode Qty (20) and a Unit dropdown (Each). × to remove. |
| 3 — Confirm | Click Move Contents (green, bottom-right) | Stock transferred from source barcode to destination barcode. Source quantity decreases; destination increases. |
The Move Contents flow scans the destination barcode first (where stock is going), then you use Scan Source Barcode to add the container(s) to transfer from. This is the reverse of what some users expect — scan where it's going, then scan what to move.
