How a job actually runs
Assembly work is BOM-heavy and change-heavy, so the flow is built around revision control and component identity.
The order lands against a versioned BOM
Multi-level, with sub-assemblies exploded down every level. The revision is controlled, so nobody builds to a stack-up that was superseded two months ago.
MRP tells you what is short
Demand is netted against stock and open purchase orders, and the shortage surfaces while there is still lead time to act on it rather than on the morning of the build.
Kitting
Components are picked by lot, so the reel that went into this build is recorded rather than assumed. That record is what makes a component-level failure investigable later.
Build to the work instruction
Steps appear on screen at the bench, versioned alongside the product. The unit takes its serial number as it is built rather than being allocated one afterwards.
Test and inspect
Results are recorded against the serial rather than the batch, so an individual unit keeps its own history.
Despatch, and what comes after
If a unit returns, its serial gives you the build date, the components fitted and the test results. If a supplier flags a component batch, you can list every unit that received it.
